What to Expect During Installation
When Darteno installs an interlock driveway at your home, the crew arrives on the confirmed start date with all required equipment, materials, and machinery already staged. There are no delays waiting for deliveries mid-project. Excavation is completed to the specified depth, base materials are placed and mechanically compacted in lifts, and paving stones are not set until the sub-base passes inspection. Most residential driveway installations across the GTA are completed over four to seven working days depending on project size, site access, and weather. Your driveway will be unavailable during active installation, and the full schedule and any phasing details are confirmed with you before work begins.
On the final day, polymeric sand is swept into the joints, compacted, and activated with water to lock the surface. The crew completes a full site cleanup, and you receive a walkthrough of the finished driveway, curing instructions for the first 30 days, and details on your warranty coverage. The balance of the project cost is due upon satisfactory completion of the final walkthrough.

What Is Included in the Estimate
The estimate specifies excavation depth, granular sub-base thickness and specification, geotextile fabric where applicable, paver product and thickness, edge restraint type, polymeric sand, and any drainage components included in the project. The specific paver product, format, and colour selected during design are named explicitly -- there are no substitutions without written approval.
Installation Components
Base Preparation
A properly prepared base is the most important factor in driveway longevity. Darteno installs a compacted granular sub-base built up in mechanically compacted lifts, with each layer inspected before the next is placed. The total base depth and number of lifts depend on soil conditions, anticipated vehicle loads, and frost depth requirements for the specific site. Reducing base depth or skipping compaction lifts is the single most common cause of long-term driveway failure in Ontario. It is something we do not do regardless of schedule pressure.
Excavation Depth
Residential interlock driveways in Ontario are typically excavated 12 to 18 inches below finished grade depending on soil type, vehicle loads, and site drainage. Clay-heavy soils common in Richmond Hill, Markham, and Vaughan require deeper excavation and a geotextile separation layer to prevent clay migration into the granular base over time. Insufficient excavation depth is the leading cause of premature settling and surface failure across GTA driveways.
Edging
Edge restraints secure the perimeter pavers and prevent the driveway surface from spreading outward under traffic and frost pressure. Darteno installs concrete or heavy-duty plastic edge restraints spiked into the compacted base along all exposed perimeter edges. Without proper edge restraints, border pavers migrate outward over time, joints widen, and the entire surface begins to lose structural integrity.
Polymeric Sand
Polymeric sand is swept into the joints between pavers and activated with water to form a firm, flexible bond that resists weed infiltration, ant damage, and paver migration. The joint sand is applied after the final compaction pass, and the driveway must remain dry for 24 hours after activation. Over time, polymeric sand erodes from high-traffic areas and along joints exposed to water flow -- reapplication every five to ten years maintains the integrity of the joint system.
Drainage
Surface drainage is engineered into the driveway profile by grading the finished surface to direct water away from the home''s foundation and toward the lot perimeter or street. Where site grade does not allow natural shedding, Darteno installs catch basins and subsurface drainage pipe to carry water away from the driveway base. Poor drainage is the second most common cause of base failure, particularly on flat lots and low-lying areas across the GTA.
Materials
Interlock driveways for residential use in Ontario are typically built with 60 mm to 80 mm concrete pavers manufactured for vehicle loads and freeze-thaw cycling. The 80 mm thickness is recommended for driveways that regularly support heavy vehicles or trucks. Paver manufacturers servicing the GTA produce stones in a wide range of colours, textures, and formats -- from standard rectangular units to large-format slabs and tumbled cobble styles -- giving homeowners substantial design flexibility.
Maintenance
Routine maintenance for an interlock driveway includes annual power washing to remove surface debris and staining, periodic inspection of joint sand levels, and reapplication of polymeric sand when erosion is visible. Sealing is optional and does not affect structural performance, but it preserves paver colour and reduces surface porosity. Homeowners should avoid steel-bladed snow plows on the paver surface and limit exposure to calcium chloride deicers, which accelerate surface wear on concrete pavers over time.

Driveway Repair
If your interlock driveway has sunken sections, shifting pavers, cracked stones, or persistent drainage problems, those issues almost always have a fixable root cause. Interlock is one of the few driveway surfaces where targeted repair is genuinely possible -- you do not have to replace everything to restore full function and appearance. Darteno repairs interlock driveways throughout Toronto, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and Markham. We identify the cause of the problem, correct it at the source, and reinstate the surface to its original level and condition.
Common Interlock Driveway Repairs
- Sunken or uneven sections -- caused by base failure, soil settlement, or poor original compaction. We lift the affected pavers, excavate and rebuild the base to the correct depth, compact in lifts, and reinstate the surface flush with the surrounding driveway.
- Frost heave -- pavers that have risen after a hard winter due to moisture beneath an undersized base. The affected area is lifted, the drainage or base depth deficiency is corrected, and the stones are relaid level.
- Individual paver replacement -- cracked, chipped, or stained stones are pulled and replaced with matching pavers. Where an exact match is no longer available, we work with you to find the closest colour and texture substitution.
- Edge restraint failure -- restraints that have pulled away from the edge course allow border pavers to fan out. We re-stake or replace the restraints and reset any displaced border stones.
- Polymeric sand restoration -- joints that have lost their sand become vulnerable to weed infiltration and paver movement. We power wash the surface, allow it to dry, and apply fresh polymeric sand to reseal the joint system.
- Drainage corrections -- driveways with recurring pooling or base erosion require surface regrading, improved subsurface drainage slope, or catch basin installation to redirect water before it undermines the base.
Darteno provides free repair assessments for homeowners in Toronto and the GTA so you understand the full scope and cost before any work begins.
Driveway Replacement
When an existing driveway has reached the end of its useful life, full replacement allows Darteno to correct original installation deficiencies that caused the surface to fail prematurely. Interlock is a common choice for homeowners in Toronto, Richmond Hill, and Markham replacing both aging asphalt and deteriorating concrete driveways.
- Replacing asphalt with interlock: Asphalt driveways that have cracked, potholed, or deteriorated beyond repair are removed along with the existing base. The site is excavated to the correct depth and rebuilt with a compacted granular base before interlock pavers are installed.
- Replacing concrete with interlock: Concrete driveways that have spalled, settled unevenly, or developed structural cracks are broken up and removed. Interlock replacement eliminates the risk of future cracking and allows for individual paver-level repair rather than full-surface patching.
- Full reconstruction: Some driveways require complete removal of the existing surface and base material to the subgrade, particularly where original construction was inadequate or persistent drainage problems have compromised the entire base depth.
Why Homeowners Choose Interlock
Increased Curb Appeal
Interlock driveways offer a finished architectural appearance that asphalt and concrete cannot match. The range of paver colours, textures, and laying patterns allows homeowners in Toronto, Richmond Hill, and Markham to create a driveway that complements the style and exterior finishes of the home.
Easier Repairs
Unlike poured concrete or asphalt, which require section-by-section patching or full resurfacing, interlocking stone driveways can be repaired at the individual paver level. A sunken section, cracked stone, or failed base beneath one area of the driveway does not require replacing the entire surface.
Better Drainage
Interlock paver joints allow water to filter through the surface rather than running off in a sheet, reducing pooling and limiting erosion at driveway edges. Permeable interlock systems take this further by routing water through a designed drainage base -- increasingly relevant as GTA municipalities place greater emphasis on on-site stormwater management.
Longer Lifespan
A professionally installed interlock driveway in Ontario is expected to last 25 to 40 years or more with routine maintenance. The individual paver system tolerates ground movement better than rigid surfaces, and because repairs can address specific problem areas without disturbing the rest of the driveway, the overall surface can be maintained in good condition over a much longer service life.
Improved Property Value
Interlock driveways are consistently viewed as a premium exterior upgrade in Toronto and GTA real estate markets. The combination of improved curb appeal, long-term durability, and low maintenance requirements contributes to a strong return on investment, particularly in neighbourhoods where exterior presentation is a significant factor in buyer perception.
Permits and Approvals
Most interlock driveway replacement projects on private property do not require a building permit in Toronto or across GTA municipalities. However, several common driveway scenarios trigger permit or approval requirements that homeowners should address before construction begins to avoid stop-work orders, fines, or required removal of completed work.
- Right-of-Way permit -- any work touching the boulevard, road apron, or area between the sidewalk and the street requires a Right-of-Way permit from the City of Toronto. Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and Markham have equivalent road allowance permit requirements managed through their respective public works departments.
- Driveway widening and boulevard hardscaping restrictions -- Toronto and most GTA municipalities limit how much of the front yard and boulevard can be covered with impervious hard surfaces. Homeowners planning to widen an existing driveway, add a second driveway opening, or pave the boulevard strip should confirm current bylaw limits with the applicable municipality before finalizing the design.
- Curb cut permits -- altering an existing curb cut or creating a new driveway access from the street requires municipal approval in Toronto and across the GTA. This work typically must be performed by a licensed contractor approved by the municipality.
- Infill and grading -- driveway projects that significantly raise or lower the finished grade of the front yard or alter drainage patterns affecting neighbouring properties may trigger a grading or fill permit, particularly on newer subdivision lots with registered grading plans.
